‘rock star inventors’ at Future Forward 2004

Sorensen
PORTSMOUTH,
N.H., Sept. 22, 2004 –
Two
of New England’s rising “rock star” inventors –
Jim McLurkin and Isaac Berzin – will speak October 14 at
Future Forward 2004.
Berzin
and McLurkin are both featured in “Juice: The Creative
Fuel That Drives World-Class Inventors” a new business
book by Evan I. Schwartz published this month by Harvard
Business School Press. Schwartz will moderate a discussion
called “Bringing Radical Inventions into the World”
that also includes VisiCalc founder Dan Bricklin and
EMC’s Mark Sorenson.
Berzin
is inventing a system for producing cheap, renewable
biofuel – formed from ordinary “fishtank” algae –
that could become the leading contender to displace coal,
oil and nuclear power in the world’s electrical power
plants. The son of an inventor, he received his Ph.D. in
chemical engineering and collaborated with several MIT
professors in
launching his “GreenFuel” pilot project on the roof of
MIT’s main power plant.
McLurkin
won the Lemelson-MIT student prize for Inventiveness in
2003. While completing his Ph.D., he became the lead
scientist on the swarm robotics project at iRobot, the
Burlington, Mass. company behind consumer robot devices
like Roomba, an autonomous vacuum cleaner. He is helping
pioneer a new field called “biomimetics,” the science
of designing technology that draws analogies from the
natural world.
Evan
I. Schwartz, the panel moderator, is a contributing writer
for MIT’s Technology Review and a former editor
at BusinessWeek. In addition to “Juice,” he is
the author of “The Last Lone Inventor: A Tale of Genius,
Deceit & the Birth of Television.” For more

Future
Forward is a prestigious annual event held in Portsmouth,
N.H., that brings together New England's technology
visionaries, CEOs, CIOs, entrepreneurs and investors. It
provides attendees with a first look at important new
technologies being developed around New England, and
explores the way large organizations deploy new
technologies to create competitive advantage.
